Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' Reign As World's Richest Lasted Just A Few Hours

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos’ reign on the top of the Forbes’ Real Time Billionaires List only lasted a morning.
Bezos became the richest person in the world for the first time with a $90.6 billion net worth when markets opened on Thursday. But while Amazon stock climbed another 1.3% to an intraday high of $1,083.31, it then dropped down to $1,046 by the time markets closed, knocking Bezos out of the top spot. He ended the day with an $88.7 billion fortune, down $540 million from late Wednesday. Gates is once again the richest person in the world with an estimated $89.8 billion fortune, down $240 million from yesterday.
Despite the drop, this is likely not Bezos’ last time at the top of Forbes’ real-time ranking. Because he owns nearly 17% of Amazon stock, small fluctuations in Amazon’s stock have billion-dollar consequences for Bezos’ net worth. As of the close of markets Thursday, Bezos was only $1.1 billion behind Gates.

Bezos’ net worth took a further hit in after hours trading Thursday when Amazon reported its second quarter earnings and had a big miss on earnings. Amazon reported earnings per share of $0.40, lower than the $1.42 per share analysts had estimated. Amazon stock dropped more than 2% in after hours trading as of 4:45 p.m. Eastern, which further reduced Bezos’ fortune by $1.8 billion. He is now worth $86.9 billion, which means the gap between Gates and Bezos is now $2.9 billion.
Bezos joined Forbes ranking of the 400 richest Americans in 1998, one year after Amazon went public, with a $1.6 billion fortune. He started the online retail giant in a garage in Seattle before his 30th birthday.

Java is a high-level programming language originally developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 1995. Java runs on a variety of platforms, such as Windows, Mac OS, and the various versions of UNIX. This tutorial gives a complete understanding of Java.

The latest release of the Java Standard Edition is Java SE 8. With the advancement of Java and its widespread popularity, multiple configurations were built to suite various types of platforms. Ex: J2EE for Enterprise Applications, J2ME for Mobile Applications.

The new J2 versions were renamed as Java SE, Java EE and Java ME respectively. Java is guaranteed to be Write Once, Run Anywhere.

Java is:

• Object Oriented: In Java, everything is an Object. Java can be easily extended since it is based on the Object model.
  
• Platform independent: Unlike many other programming languages including C and C++, when Java is compiled, it is not compiled into platform specific machine, rather into platform independent byte code. This byte code is distributed over the web and interpreted by virtual Machine (JVM) on whichever platform it is being run.
  
• Simple: Java is designed to be easy to learn. If you understand the basic concept of OOP Java would be easy to master.
  
• Secure: With Java's secure feature it enables to develop virus-free, tamper-free systems. Authentication techniques are based on public-key encryption.
  
• Architectural-neutral: Java compiler generates an architecture-neutral object file format which makes the compiled code to be executable on many processors, with the presence of Java runtime system.
  
• Portable: Being architectural-neutral and having no implementation dependent aspects of the specification makes Java portable. Compiler in Java is written in ANSI C with a clean portability boundary which is a POSIX subset.
  
• Robust: Java makes an effort to eliminate error prone situations by emphasizing mainly on compile time error checking and runtime checking.
  
• Multithreaded: With Java's multithreaded feature it is possible to write programs that can do many tasks simultaneously. This design feature allows developers to construct smoothly running interactive applications.
  
• Interpreted: Java byte code is translated on the fly to native machine instructions and is not stored anywhere. The development process is more rapid and analytical since the linking is an incremental and light weight process.
  
• High Performance: With the use of Just-In-Time compilers, Java enables high performance.
  
• Distributed: Java is designed for the distributed environment of the internet.
  
• Dynamic: Java is considered to be more dynamic than C or C++ since it is designed to adapt to an evolving environment. Java programs can carry extensive amount of run-time information that can be used to verify and resolve accesses to objects on run-time.

Apple Removes Apps From China Store That Help Internet Users Evade Censorship









HONG KONG — China appears to have received help on Saturday from an unlikely source in its fight against tools that help users evade its Great Firewall of internet censorship: Apple.


Software made by foreign companies to help users skirt the country’s system of internet filters has vanished from Apple’s app store on the mainland.


One company, ExpressVPN, posted a letter it had received from Apple saying that its app had been taken down “because it includes content that is illegal in China.”


Another tweeted from its official account that its app had been removed.
A search on Saturday showed that a number of the most popular foreign virtual-private networks, also known as VPNs, which give users access to the unfiltered internet in China, were no longer accessible on the company’s app store there.


ExpressVPN wrote in its blog that the removal was “surprising and unfortunate.”


It added, “We’re disappointed in this development, as it represents the most drastic measure the Chinese government has taken to block the use of VPNs to date, and we are troubled to see Apple aiding China’s censorship efforts.”


Sunday Yokubaitis, president of Golden Frog, a company that makes privacy and security software including VyprVPN, said its software, too, had been taken down from the app store. “We gladly filed an amicus brief in support of Apple in their backdoor encryption battle with the F.B.I.,” he said, “so we are extremely disappointed that Apple has bowed to pressure from China to remove VPN apps without citing any Chinese law or regulation that makes VPN illegal.”


He added, “We view access to internet in China as a human rights issue, and I would expect Apple to value human rights over profits.”


In a statement, Apple noted that the Chinese government announced this year that all developers offering VPNs needed to obtain a government license. “We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations,” the company said. “These apps remain available in all other markets where they do business.”


This is not the first time that Apple has removed apps at the request of the Chinese government, but it is a new reminder of how deeply beholden the tech giant has become to ******* at a moment when the leadership has been pushing to tighten its control over the internet.


The removals signal a new push by China to control the internet. In the past, the Great Firewall has used technology to disrupt VPNs, and ******* has shut down Chinese VPNs and even aimed a huge cyberattack at a well-known foreign site hosting code that circumvented the filters.
But they also mark the first time China has successfully used its influence with a major foreign tech platform, like Apple, to push back against the software makers.


While internet crackdowns often peak every five years, ahead of a key Chinese Communist Party congress, this year’s efforts cover fresh ground, a likely indication that stricter controls of things like VPNs will persist after the congress this autumn. Earlier this month, China also began a partial block of the Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp.


Greater China is Apple’s largest market outside the United States. That has left the company more vulnerable than almost any other American technology firm to a Chinese campaign to wean itself off foreign technology and tighten control over foreign tech companies operating there.


In response, Apple has made a number of moves to ensure that it stays on *******’s good side. Last year, the company complied with what it said was a request from the Chinese authorities to remove from its China app store news apps created by The New York Times.


This month, the company said it would open its first data center in China to comply with a new law that pushes foreign firms to store more of their data in China.


Apple has operated its app store in China for many years with only the occasional run-in with the government. The VPN crackdown and *******’s move in December to target news sites indicates that China’s internet regulators have taken a deeper interest, and are exerting more control, over what is available on Apple’s China app store.

Apple Listing Select Movies as 4K and HDR in iTunes Purchase History

MacRumors reader Tomas Jackson, who resides in the UK, has discovered Apple is listing select movies as 4K and HDR in iTunes purchase history.


In a discussion topic on the MacRumors forums, Jackson shared a screenshot of his iTunes purchase history with the 2016 film Passengers listed as "Movie (4K, HDR)" under the Type column. However, he said iTunes only let him download the movie in HD quality, which is either 720p or 1080p depending on the content.


Another reader mentioned that the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is also listed as 4K and HDR. MacRumors rented the film to check, and we can confirm the film indeed has "4K, HDR" next to it in our iTunes purchase history. Nevertheless, iTunes lists the movie's video quality as 720p.

Not all movies are listed as "4K, HDR" at this time, and it may be region specific for now. One reader from the United States shared a screenshot of Passengers still being listed as "Film (HD)" in his iTunes purchase history. MacRumors can confirm "4K, HDR" has appeared in both the UK and Canada at least.


iTunes content remains viewable in SD and HD for the time being, but the discovery suggests Apple may be gearing up for what's around the corner — 4K and HDR support for both iTunes content and a new Apple TV.

In February, Bloomberg reported Apple was testing a new, fifth-generation Apple TV capable of streaming 4K video, adding that it may be released as soon as this year. The report also said the new Apple TV, allegedly codenamed "J105" internally, would display more vivid colors, suggesting HDR support.

A month later, developer Firi Games provided MacRumors with evidence of a device identified as "AppleTV6,2" and running "tvOS 11.0" connecting to its arcade game Phoenix HD for Apple TV in its logs. The IP address fell within a range linked to Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The current Apple TV has a model identifier of AppleTV5,3, and Apple TV6,2 does not correspond with any released model.

It's conceivable that Apple could launch 4K content in iTunes alongside a new Apple TV with support for up to 4K video output and HDR, or high dynamic range, which allows for sharper colors and lighting. The current, fourth-generation Apple TV has a maximum 1080p video output, and no support for HDR.

Netflix has embraced 4K, offering its original series in ultra-high-resolution on compatible devices. The high-end iMac models with 4K and 5K Retina displays are currently Apple's only devices that can properly display 4K content. The latest Apple TV lacks the hardware required for 4K and HDR video output.

Apple Begins Paying $2 Billion in Cash to Nokia as Part of Lawsuit Settlement

Nokia disclosed its financial results for the second quarter of 2017 this week, and within the results the company mentioned that it received an "up-front cash payment" of approximately €1.7 billion ($2 billion), part of which was said to be recognized during the Q2 2017 results. Nokiamob then reached out to Nokia, and the company confirmed that the cash payment came from Apple.

The payment is part of a settlement agreement reached between Apple and Nokia in May of this year, regarding a lawsuit began by Nokia in December 2016. In the original lawsuit, Nokia sued Apple in the United States and multiple other countries, with a complaint that stemmed from a disagreement between the two companies over licensing fees for Nokia technology.


The legal battle continued to escalate as Apple responded with its own antitrust lawsuit against Nokia. In Apple's claims, the company said that Nokia was transferring patents to patent holding entities in a bid to gain additional royalties from Apple, violating FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) deals Apple had established with Nokia.

In the settlement news this past May, the companies agreed to a multi-year patent license deal, where Nokia would provide "certain network infrastructure products and services" to Apple, and Apple would then return all Nokia-owned health products to Apple retail and online stores.

In regards to the $2 billion payment from Apple, Nokia said it would disclose its plans for the money in its Q3 earnings later this year.

Nokia Technologies led the way, with sales up 90% versus the same period last year. That was largely, but not completely, driven by our recently-announced agreement with Apple; and you can also see the impact of that agreement in our cash position.

So far, Apple has only partially paid the $2 billion cash sum to Nokia, so besides finishing that payment, Apple will also continue to pay royalties to the company during the term of the agreement.

Apple Watch Jailbroken!

Hacker Max Bazaliy has jailbroken the Apple Watch, demonstrating the achievement at the DEFCON security conference in Las Vegas today.


Bazaliy is a security researcher at Lookout and co-founder of the Fried Apple team. During a presentation at DEFCON (you can download the slides from here), he detailed the steps taken to get to a fully jailbroken device.



The jailbroken Apple Watch provides access to SMS, Calls, Health, Photos and Emails synced to the Watch, iPhone GPS location, microphone, and Apple Pay. Bazaliy says he has full access to the jailbroken watch file system including sqlite3 databases for Messages, Call History, Contacts, and Emails.

In order to get SSH working, Bluetooth is used to forward the connection from an iPhone to the watch. Bazaliy says his next steps for the jailbreak are to interpose or trampoline system functions, catch data on sync with an iPhone, create tweaks for a watch and run frida and radare. It's unclear if there are plans to release the jailbreak publicly but we'll let you know if we hear more

iPhone 8 Wireless Charging Component Leaked?

Photos have surfaced which allegedly reveal a wireless charging coil for the iPhone 8.

Posted to Weibo by chongdiantou, the photos are purportedly sourced from an anonymous engineer. The part features a single-coil architecture for the charging coil and what appears to be a female Lightning port on the bottom for traditional charging. It's said to feature USB Power Delivery perhaps via a USB Type-C to Lightning charging cable which would supply up to 12V.



On the back of the component we can see some specifications:

● Output current: 0.6A-2A
● Output power: 5W-10W
● Efficiency: 70% -85%
● Compatible with WPC QI
● Product Certification: CE FCC Rohs
● Operating frequency: 110K-230K

It's said that Apple is testing a variety wireless charging technologies including inductive and magnetic resonance. It's still unclear which technology will ship with the new smartphone.

Apple Apparently Discontinues iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

Apple today removed the iPod nano and iPod shuffle from its website and online store around the world, suggesting the iconic portable media players may be discontinued. Apple continues to sell the iPod touch. 


 
Beyond new colors and storage capacities, Apple had last updated the iPod nano in October 2012 and the iPod shuffle in September 2010. Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015 with an 8-megapixel rear camera. 

Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January 2005, followed by the iPod nano in September 2005. In total, there were seven generations of the iPod nano, and four generations of the iPod shuffle. 

 

iPod sales had been declining for several years. Apple reported 2.6 million iPods sold in the fourth quarter of 2014. Since then, Apple has grouped iPod sales under its "Other Products" category in quarterly earnings results. 

iPod sales peaked at 54.8 million in 2008, compared to 14.3 million in 2014, the last year in which data is available.

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 leaked renders have made their way onto the web. Here’s what Google 2017 flagship looks like.


With the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 getting so much attention right now it is often easy to forget that there are other flagship smartphones that are still to arrive this year. The two we are most interested in today are the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, the replacements for last year’s Pixel devices

Leaks surrounding the two new phones have been in a much smaller scale than either Apple or Samsung’s latest and greatest, but that does not mean that there is nothing to learn, and prolific leaker @OnLeaks again has the scoop. There have been a handful of leaks which gave us an idea of what we could expect from the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, with screen sizes of 4.95-inches and 5.99-inches respectively, 4GB of RAM, 64GB and 128GB storage and yes, a complete lack of any sort of 3.5mm headphone jack. Sorry folks.



The new leak from OnLeaks is a render of what both of the new and as-yet unannounced devices may look like and they certainly fit in with previous leaks. There is indeed no headphone jack, and as was the case last year the fingerprint sensor remains on the rear of both devices. In fact, both the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 do look very similar, something that had previously been suggested to not be the case.

Apart from the difference in screen size, the real difference that we notice immediately is the larger top and bottom bezels on the smaller of the two phones. Chassis wise, we are looking at dimensions of 145.3 x 69.3 x 7.8 mm for the Pixel 2 while the Pixel XL 2 will be 157.6 x 76.3 x 7.9 mm. Expect both devices to gain around half a milliliter around the camera bump, too.



At this point we would not want to say with absolute certainty that this latest leak is real, but given OnLeaks’ past record we see little reason to doubt we are looking at the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 in the pictures above.

Apple's 'iPhone 8' Might Not Ship Until Late 2017, Side Button Touch ID Unlikely

Though Apple's radically redesigned "iPhone 8" is expected to be introduced in September alongside standard iPhone 7s and 7s Plus devices, it may not start shipping out to consumers until October to early November, according to new information shared today by Japanese site Mac Otakara [Google Translate]. 


Citing information from supply chain sources and various accessory makers, Mac Otakara says the iPhone 8 will not ship until the first half of the first quarter of fiscal 2018, translating to sometime in October or November. This is in line with many previous rumors and analyst predictions hinting at a delayed mass production timeline.

The site's sources have only seen a front display panel component in black, suggesting Apple may only release the iPhone 8 in black. Previous rumors have suggested it will be available in a limited number of colors, with white unconfirmed. 

There has been some speculation that because Apple is removing the Home button from the iPhone and introducing a larger side button Touch ID could be built into said side button, but Mac Otakara does not believe that is the case. Side button components are said to be solid with no additional sensors or parts needed for Touch ID, suggesting the side button is just a simple power button. 

With rumors of both rear and side button Touch ID quashed, it's looking more like reports suggesting Touch ID is built into the display or removed entirely are accurate. 

Apple was said to be planning to build Touch ID into the display of the device, but rumors now indicate its efforts may have been unsuccessful, with the company instead planning to replace Touch ID with facial recognition. 

Reports are still mixed, however, so it's not yet entirely clear if Touch ID has been eliminated, but Mac Otakara says the possibility of in-display Touch ID "seems to be low." 

Based on images of screen protectors, the site believes there are several new front-facing sensors accessory makers will need to compensate for, further pointing towards the inclusion of new 3D sensors for facial recognition purposes. The front-facing FaceTime camera may also be relocated to the right of the device. 


 

With August fast approaching, we're only about five or six weeks away from the prospective debut date of the iPhone 8 and its companion devices, based on past launch timelines. In recent years, iPhone launch events have taken place during the first or second week of September.

Foxconn has allegedly started trial production of three new iPhones, claims Benjamin Geskin. A source has told Geskin that about 200 units are being produced a day and that the OLED iPhone 8 is on schedule.

Production of 3(New) iPhones has Allegedly Started as Trial by Foxconn

[Studay] iPhone Has Seen Largest Number Of Switchers From Android In Past 12 Months

New data made available by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners shows that the iPhone has seen the largest number of switchers from Android devices in the past 12 months, with the period running April through June proving the most popular among those jumping ship to the iPhone.



CIRP also reported via its numbers that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus accounted for 81% of all U.S. iPhone sales during the quarter. Broken down, that boils down to 47% for the smaller model and 34% for the Plus.

The mentioned percentage saw an increase to 20% this past quarter. The increase in buyers switching from Android phones to iPhones could well have something to do with carriers offering discounts on iPhone handsets as they get ready to switch their inventory over to whatever Apple has to offer come this September.

Also of note for Apple will be the news from CIRP that there is a general trend toward larger and higher-capacity iPhones. With Apple charging a premium for both the Plus variant of its iPhone as well as larger capacities, we can only imagine how well that news has gone down in Apple’s HQ.

Lenovo has launched a new flagship smartphone, the Moto Z2 Force . Like the previous 'Force' smartphone in the Moto Z series, the Moto Z2 Force Edition - as the company calls it - sports a ShatterShield display that's guaranteed not to crack or shatter. As rumoured, the smartphone also bears dual rear cameras and carries forward the Moto Z series' support for Moto Mod accessories. Key specifications of the Moto Z2 Force include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, up to 6GB of RAM, and Gigabit LTE connectivity. Alongside the smartphone, the company also officially launched the Moto 360 Camera Moto Mod for the US market.

The smartphone will go on sale across various carriers in the US from August 10, with pre-orders now open for buyers in the country. Unlocked, the price of the Moto Z2 Force starts at $799 (roughly Rs. 51,500), with monthly plans starting from $33 (roughly Rs. 2,000). It will be available in Fine Gold, Lunar Grey (for T-Mobile only), and Super Black colour variants. The smartphone will go on sale across various carriers in the US from August 10, with pre-orders now open. The Moto Z2 Force will go on sale in Mexico, Brazil, Europe, Middle East, and Africa from "later this summer", the company says. There's no word yet on India price or release date of the Moto Z2 Force.

The new Moto is built out of 7000 series aluminium, and its 6.1mm thick unibody design also forgoes the 3.5mm headphone jack to use a USB Type-C port instead - a 3.5mm to USB Type-C adapter is included in the box. The super-slim profile also restricted the company to a relatively undersized 2730mAh battery, and a water-repellent nano-coating has been added. The back panel features pogo pin connectors for the Moto Mods.

The company has also included compatibility for Google's Daydream VR platform. The Moto Z2 Force bears a fingerprint scanner on the Home Button, which also features the new one-button navigation features we first saw introduced in the Moto G5 series. It will be available in two RAM variants - 4GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage and 6GB RAM/ 128GB inbuilt storage - while some regions will receive a dual-SIM model.
Running Android 7.1.1 Nougat (with an upgrade to Android O promised), the Moto Z2 Force sports a 5.5-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) ShatterShield POLED display. As we mentioned, the smartphone is powered by the top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, coupled with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM.



The Moto Z2 Force bears dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, with one capturing light in colour and the other in monochrome. Both sport Sony IMX386 sensors with 1.25-micron pixels, and an f/2.0 aperture. The setup also bears PDAF, laser autofocus, and a CCT dual-LED flash. With the setup, users can enjoy features like selective focus (Bokeh), selective black and white, background replacement, and real-time and post shot depth. As for the front camera, the Moto Z2 Force sports a 5-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, 85-degree wide angle lens, and LED flash module.

The smartphone's inbuilt storage is expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). Connectivity options include 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.2 (v5.0 support to be added with Android O update), NFC, GPS/ A-GPS, and USB Type-C. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and proximity sensor. The 2730mAh battery comes with a 15W TurboPower charger. The Moto Z2 Force measures 155.8x76x 6.1mm, and weighs 143 grams.

Finally, we come to the new Moto 360 Camera Moto Mod can capture 4K 360-degree video alongside 3D audio. Apart from that, users will also be able to capture 150-degree wide-angle still images with the camera. To recall, it was unveiled alongside six Moto Mod additions earlier this month. It has been priced at $299 (roughly Rs. 19,300), and will be available globally from August 10.
