Apple Seeds Fifth Beta of iOS 10.3.3 to Developers

0 commentaires
Apple today seeded the fifth beta of an upcoming iOS 10.3.3 update to developers, one week after seeding the fourth beta and over a month after the release of iOS 10.3.2, which was a minor bug fix update.

Registered developers can download the fifth iOS 10.3.3 beta from the Apple Developer Center or over-the-air with the proper configuration profile installed.

There were no significant features or notable bug fixes found in the first four iOS 10.3.3 betas, suggesting iOS 10.3.3 is an update that's minor in scale, focusing primarily on security updates and bug fixes.

iOS 10.3.3 will likely be one of the last updates to the iOS 10 operating system as Apple shifts development to iOS 11. The first beta of iOS 11 was released to developers on June 5 following Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, and two betas have been seeded thus far.

Samsung Releasing Refurbished Note 7 Devices as 'Fandom Edition' in South Korea

0 commentaires
About ten months after the first reported cases of Galaxy Note 7 fires began circulating online, Samsung is gearing up to re-launch the smartphone "initially" only in South Korea, according to people familiar with the company's plans (via The Wall Street Journal). Referred to as the Galaxy Note 7 FE, or "Fandom Edition," the launch is said to be coming on July 7 in the country, and it'll represent the third debut for Note 7 devices following the original launch last August, and a widespread recall and replacement later in 2016.

Even those replacement devices caught fire, but Samsung has chosen to continue the Note 7 brand with the new Fandom Edition and bring a "relatively modest" stock of inventory to retailers in South Korea. In total, it's believed 400,000 Note 7 Fandom Editions will debut among three major telecom companies in the country.

Samsung will bring the Fandom Edition to market "with different components," instead of the faulty battery components that caused the first launch and some replacement devices to catch fire. Any word on a wider launch for the Fandom Edition was not mentioned by the sources.
Quote:A refurbished version of the premium smartphone, whose global recall last year garnered unwanted attention for the South Korean technology giant after some caught fire, is coming to retailers’ shelves on July 7 with different components under the name Galaxy Note 7 FE, according to people familiar with the matter.

The refurbished Note 7 will be priced below 700,000 South Korean won ($616), although smartphone prices are generally adjusted up to the point of release due to fluctuating market conditions, the person said.
Samsung's intent to keep the Note brand alive was detailed in a report earlier this month, which also pointed towards the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 8 coming sometime in August. Since the Note 7 was discontinued, Samsung released the mid-cycle Galaxy S8 smartphone in April, with the company saying pre-orders for the device were its "best ever" and analysts suggesting that the S8's messaging and launch helped it to begin recovering from the Note 7 disaster.

Apple Stops Signing iOS 10.3.1

0 commentaires
Following the release of iOS 10.3.2 on May 15, Apple has stopped signing iOS 10.3.1, the previous version of iOS that was available to consumers.

Customers who have upgraded to iOS 10.3.2 will no longer be able to downgrade their devices to iOS 10.3.1.

Apple routinely stops signing older versions of software updates after new releases come out in order to encourage customers to keep their operating systems up to date.

iOS 10.3.2 is now the only version of iOS 10 that can be installed on iOS devices by the general public, but developers and public beta testers can download iOS 10.3.3, a future update that is being beta tested and could see a release in the near future.

Apple has seeded iOS 10.3.3 beta 4 to developers for testing. The build number is 14G5053a.

Notes and Known Issues
● Managed and Shared Devices: The ability to update devices from a remote server is in development and may not yet work as expected.

● openURL: When a third party application invokes openURL: on a tel://, facetime://, or
facetime-audio:// URL, iOS displays a prompt and requires user confirmation before dialing.

● SOS: SOS is only supported in India.

● WebKit: Safari now supports the prefers-reduced-motion media query. This query allows a web developer to provide alternate page styles for users who are sensitive to large areas of motion.
Users can change their preference for reduced motion in the Accessibility section of System Preferences.

            Highlights
            • Sony is reportedly rolling out Android 7.1.1 Nougat to Xperia X
            • Xperia X Compact is also said to be receiving the Android 7.1.1 Nougat
            • The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update brings June Android security patch
In November last year, Sony started pushing the Android 7.0 Nougat update to its premium line of smartphones. The Sony Xperia X and Xperia X Compact got the Nougat update in December and now users report the company is rolling out Android 7.1.1 Nougat to these devices. As per a report, the Android 7.1.1 Nougat is being released to most of the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact users along with the June Android security patch update.
According to Xperia Blog, the new update for Sony Xperia X and Xperia X Compact brings Android 7.1.1 Nougat through a new build number 34.3.A.0.194. It also comes with the latest June Android security patches for Xperia X and Xperia X Compact. It is not clear whether the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update is rolling out globally.

The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update brings a number of features such as app shortcuts, support for circular app icons, keyboard image insertion, new emojis, and more. However, a few Xperia X and Xperia X Compact owners report that the app shortcuts feature doesn't seem to be working on the handsets. Some other features like the clock widget also appear to be missing. There is a possibility that Sony may have chosen to do away with these features as Android versions customised by OEMs do not always have the exact Android features as packed in Google's Pixel and Nexus smartphones.
For the specifications, the Sony Xperia X Compact features a smaller 4.6-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS display. It is powered by a hexa-core Snapdragon 650 processor paired with 3GB of RAM. It also sports a 23-megapixel rear camera with IMX300 sensor. There is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Xperia X Compact also comes with USB Type-C port and Quick Charge 2.0 support. On the other hand, Sony Xperia X packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC coupled with 3GB of RAM; 32GB inbuilt storage that's expandable storage support up to 200GB via microSD card. It has a 23-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor, predictive hybrid autofocus, and pulse LED flash, apart from a 13-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

Developers can download the new build from the link below...

iOS 11 Beta Has Been Jailbroken!

                                0 commentaires
A jailbreak of iOS 11 beta and iOS 10.3.2 has been demonstrated at the MOSEC security conference by KeenLab!

Min(Spark) Zheng, an iOS Senior Security Engineer at Alibaba, posted images of Tencent KeenLab’s presentation during which the jailbreak was unveiled. While this is very exciting news, iOS 11 is still in early beta so it’s unclear if their jailbreak will continue to work once the final version is released this fall. Additionally, we have no information yet on whether there are plans to release the jailbreak. Often security researchers are able to sell jailbreaks for a large payday. Even Apple has a bounty program now.
As you can see in the images below, KeenLab demoed the jailbreak on an iPhone 6 running iOS 10.3.2, iPhone 7 running iOS 10.3.2, and iPhone 7 running iOS 11 Beta 2.

We’ll be watching closely to learn more about the jailbreak and its potential for release. Make sure to follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.

Google Will Soon Stop Scanning Your Email to Personalize Ads

Google has announced that it will soon stop scanning your Gmail messages for ad personalization.
G Suite’s Gmail is already not used as input for ads personalization, and Google has decided to follow suit later this year in our free consumer Gmail service. Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change. This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads for other Google products. Ads shown are based on users’ settings. Users can change those settings at any time, including disabling ads personalization. G Suite will continue to be ad free.
Google also revealed today that Gmail now has over 1.2 billion users. New add-ons will enable features like payments and invoicing directly within Gmail.

Supply Chain Evidence Mounts for Advanced 3D Sensing Abilities Coming to iPhone 8

                                0 commentaires
Ahead of the iPhone 8’s predicted September announcement date, supply chain reports over the past few days have indicated a ramp up of 3D sensing components that are predicted to be destined for augmented reality and biometric security applications in 2017’s high-end iPhone 8. In a research note by BlueFin Research Partners, “winners” for iPhone 8 component production are said to include Finisar and Lumentum for 3D sensing modules and Broadcom for wireless charging components (via Barron’s).
Reports began building last week when iPhone camera component supplier Largan Precision confirmed that it will ship lenses for 3D sensing modules in the second half of 2017, while refraining from directly mentioning Apple and iPhone 8. In a recent quarterly earnings report, supplier Finisar made remarks that heavily suggested it will be “one of two or three suppliers” of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) in the iPhone 8, according to LoupVentures.

iPhone 8 rendering by Benjamin Geskin

Such technology could be implemented into the iPhone 8’s rumored 3D sensing module and help “enrich the augmented reality experience” in the next-generation iPhone. Apple and CEO Tim Cook earlier this month detailed plans to back AR and its potential as an indispensable future technology with the reveal of ARKit, a developer platform that will provide the building blocks for consumer AR iPhone apps.

Likewise, Lumentum has announced that it expects to see volume shipments for its VCSEL lasers begin in the second half of 2017, timed with the annual production ramp up of iPhone manufacturing.
Quote:On last nights earnings call, Finisar management did not mention Apple by name, but they highlighted they expect to see volume VCSEL orders in their second fiscal quarter, which is the October quarter end of this calendar year. The company anticipates shipping “millions” of units during the quarter, but management also went on to say they anticipate unit shipments to be in the “10s of millions” in future quarters, which gives us further confidence 3D sensing and AR applications will be one of the focus features in the next generation of iPhones. In May of this year, Lumentum was the first VCSEL supplier to announce they anticipate volume shipments to begin in the second half of 2017.
We also want to highlight Finisar acknowledged they are shipping VCSEL lasers to multiple customers, but one customer (aka Apple) is accounting for the majority of total demand. We believe Finisar and others supplying VCSEL lasers are supply constraint and shipping everything they can manufacture. We believe Apple has secured a high percentage of all VCSEL lasers created, which we view as a large competitive advantage and will make Apple a leading AR player in the smartphone space.
LoupVentures further suggested that the significantly updated iPhone 8 will have a front-facing, low-end VCSEL laser and a rear-facing, high-end VCSEL laser, meaning that AR applications could take advantage of either camera. A long-running rumor for the iPhone 8 has been a dual-lens rear camera that could provide increased separation between the two lenses and allow for a greater difference in perspective, helping fuel better AR experiences. A front-facing dual-lens camera has been suggested as a possibility in the new iPhone as well.
In estimating the iPhone 8’s cost, the site believes that Apple will add around $100 onto the cost of the smartphone specifically due to incorporating 3D sensing modules. That price comes to around $950 (with no storage tier size references), and largely falling into line with the new iPhone’s predicted “premium” status.
For its part, Broadcom is said to have a predominant place in the supply chain for wireless charging components of the iPhone 8, a feature fellow supplier Wistron recently confirmed will be coming to at least one of 2017’s iPhone models. iPhone 8’s wireless charging is expected to be fueled by inductive technology, because long-range wireless charging for an iPhone is still expected to be years away from feasibility.
In total, reports surrounding iPhone 8 component manufacturing have been increasing recently, with Apple said to be dominating the NAND memory chip supply chain and increasing shortages for an already strained section of component supplies.

Proposed Law Against Apple’s ‘Walled Garden’ Software Approach Sparks Fears of iPhone

                                0 commentaires
Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera [Google Translate] published a headline today that translates to “the bill that could ban the iPhone in Italy.”
The bill in question, Senate Act 2484, is aimed at ensuring Italians have open access to software, content, and services. The portion of the bill potentially relevant to Apple essentially says that users should have the right to download any software, whether proprietary or open source, on any platform.
An excerpt from Article Four of the loosely translated bill:

Quote:Users have the right to, in an appropriate format to the required technology platform […] use fair and non-discriminatory software, proprietary or open source […] content and services of their choice.
It’s well known that iOS is a walled garden, in which apps can only be distributed through the App Store, and only if developers adhere to Apple’s guidelines. The only way to download apps outside of Apple’s parameters is by jailbreaking, which is in violation of Apple’s end-user agreement.
                                [Image: app_store_ios_11.jpg?resize=545%2C424&ssl=1]

Naturally, there are some concerns about how the iPhone and other devices could be affected if the bill is approved, although the prospect of any Apple product being outright banned in Italy seems highly unlikely.
The bill was introduced last year by Stefano Quintarelli, an Italian entrepreneur and member of the Scelta Civica political party in Italy. The bill was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in July 2016, and it now must be approved by the Senate of the Republic, within Italy’s parliamentary government.

iPhone 8 real-world look simulated using dummy unit with edge-to-edge display

                                0 commentaires
If you haven’t been at least a little excited by the iPhone 8 leaks we’ve seen so far, Benjamin Geskin’s latest preview based on rumors creates a rather realistic look at what we can expect later this year. Geskin has matched an alleged iPhone 8 dummy unit with a printed image under a glossy screen protector to simulate what the iPhone 8 could look like in the wild.
As we’ve seen in previous coverage of this particular dummy unit, we see a dramatically reduced bezel that goes edge-to-edge and drops the forehead and chin in favor of a nearly full-screen display. The one exception is the top center where the speaker, camera, and other sensors are located. While the final design certainly isn’t known yet, Geskin expects this approach to be what Apple ships later this year.
Adding to the iPhone 8 eye candy is a short video clip of the dummy unit all dressed up with one of the new iOS wallpapers to simulate how a functional unit might look… it’s a significant leap forward from the current iPhone design

The wallpaper Geskin used is part of a beach themed collection of images that appeared within the iOS 10.3.3 beta only for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but they have since appeared on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and new 12.9-inch iPad Pro running iOS 10.3.2.
A video shared on Geskin’s Twitter account has further provided a glimpse into the iPhone 8 dummy in motion.
                                Video Dummy
The iPhone 8 is predicted to to be the first major iPhone redesign since the iPhone 6 in 2014, with additional features such as wireless charging and improved waterproofing to further bolster the smartphone’s position as a premium device. Alongside the iPhone 8 will be the “iPhone 7s” and “iPhone 7s Plus,” which are expected to keep the current iPhone 7 design while offering the usual iterative spec bumps like improved battery life and snappier performance.

iMac Pro May Feature Intel’s Server-Grade ‘Purley’ Processors, ARM Coprocessor

Apple earlier this month unveiled the iMac Pro, a workstation-class desktop computer with up to an 18-core Intel Xeon processor, top-of-the-line Radeon Pro Vega graphics, up to 4TB of SSD storage, and up to 128GB of ECC RAM.

Apple didn’t specify exactly which processors will be included in the iMac Pro, but if the blog Pike’s Universum is to be believed, it could be powered by Intel’s next-generation server-grade Skylake-EX and Skylake-EP processors, which are based on a platform codenamed “Purley.”
The blog, which appears to be sourcing its information from firmware files in the macOS High Sierra developer beta, said the iMac Pro will use Intel’s new server-class LGA3647 socket, not its high-end, desktop-class LGA2066 socket.

If the information is accurate, it suggests the iMac Pro could have truly server-grade Xeon processors, rather than using Intel’s recently announced Core-X series of Skylake and Kaby Lake chips that still use the LGA2066 socket.
The blog added that the new iMac Pro appears to be coming with a Secure Enclave, suggesting it will have an ARM coprocessor like the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar for added security. It would also open the door to Touch ID on the iMac Pro, but Apple made no mention of the feature when introducing the computer.
Pike’s Universum revealed some of the iMac Pro’s tech specs in April, two months prior to it being announced, including that it would have Xeon processors, ECC RAM, faster SSD storage, AMD graphics options, and Thunderbolt 3 ports, but some of the specific details proved to be inaccurate.
Apple said the iMac Pro will be available to order in December, starting at $4,999 in the United States.
